North Bend, a growing mountain city nestled in King County's Snoqualmie Valley, is steeped in history, cultural significance, and an active community. The city, made famous due to David Lynch’s iconic television series Twin Peaks, immortalized Twede's Cafe with its cherry pie and "damn fine cup o' coffee," still enjoyed by visitors and locals alike today.
However, the area’s history dates much further back. The Snoqualmie Valley was originally home to the Snoqualmie Tribe, led by Chief Patkanim. For centuries, the tribe thrived in the valley, which was a vital crossroads for Native American trails connecting Puget Sound to Eastern Washington. Jeremiah Borst, the first permanent non-Native American settler, arrived in 1858 after traveling west by ox team. Borst became known as the 'Father of the Snoqualmie Valley' for his role in its development, which marked the beginning of a wave of settlement in the area. North Bend was officially incorporated in 1909, recognized as a center for agriculture and logging, and solidifying its place in Washington State's history.
Originally named Snoqualmie, the town was renamed to avoid confusion with the nearby town of Snoqualmie Falls. After a brief stint as Mountain View, the name North Bend was chosen, reflecting its location on a bend in the river.
The arrival of the railroad marked the catalyst of tourism in North Bend - an industry that shaped the city. For decades, Seattle residents have travelled to North Bend for indoor and outdoor excursions for a day trip, a weekend away, or longer. With its ideal location at the base of the Cascade Range, North Bend is an outdoor paradise. One of North Bend’s most iconic landmarks is Mount Si, named after early settler Josiah 'Uncle Si' Merritt. Today, the Mount Si Trail, one of the state’s most popular hikes due to its impressively breathtaking views, continues to attract both locals and visitors alike.
Today, more can be learned about North Bend’s history by visiting the Northwest Railway Museum, the Snoqualmie Valley Historical Museum, or speaking to a fellow local.
Mount Si, with its dramatic peak rising above the Snoqualmie Valley, is a short drive from downtown North Bend and offers some of the most popular trails in the region within the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Snoqualmie Pass, a beloved nearby ski resort, rounds out the area's year-round recreation offerings with skiing, snowbarding, snowshoeing, and summer hiking.
North Bend's blend of historic and modern architecture, diverse outdoor recreation, and commitment to preserving its natural landscapes make it a city that draws both visitors and long-term residents.
